If you're on a business trip or changed residence to Qatar, you might be in need of calling your friends and family back home. If you’re using a landline, mobile or more affordable version, a prepaid calling card, here are the codes you need to remember:
- 011 – this code must be dialed first for all international calls originating from the US
- 974 – dial the country code for Qatar
- Phone number – without any added prefixes, an 8 digit number for any region including Doha

Doha Cupcake Competition: The Winner

Qatar Stadiums - Will they do the job?

A New Way to Keep Up With Qatar News

Qatar is hitting the headlines at the moment.

Qatar is supporting the rebels in Libya, but the government in Bahrain. Al Jazeera has been challenged in it role of supporting freedom in the Middle East (and its assertions of editorial independence) after also supporting the Bahrain government, and Qatar jets could soon be in action over Libya.

It's not something we have covered on QatarVisitor.com, as some time ago we decided to focus on being a travel guide. So I am really glad that the excellent people from DohaNews, who supply us with a constant stream of both news and astute and funny comments on Twitter, have set up a new site focussed purely on Qatar and Qatar related news.

Alzheimer's Research Blogging Competition

I am helping out this month with a writing competition to raise money for Alzheimers' Research.

You may already have been touched by Alzheimer's. Nearly half of us have a relative or friend who has the disease. Unfortunately, this number is forecast to grow rapidly in the future. One in ten of us will get the disease if we reach the age of 65, a number increasing to more than half of us by the time we are 85.

Research has already managed to produce drugs which can slow the progress of the disease. However, it is desperately underfunded, receiving just a fraction of the funds cancer research receives.

TheDisabledShop is both donating funds to research to help stop the disease, and holding a competition to raise awareness and further funds.

There are some great prizes - including life pro-membership of popular blogging forum MyBlogGuest and a free c-commerce store from BigCommerce. But the best reason to get involved is to help defeat Alzhzeimer's. To learn more about the competition or to get involved click here.

Weekend Breaks in Dubai

Dubai is a hugely popular tourist destination for travelers from around the world. With its massive growth in tourism there is, unsurprisingly, a fantastic number of attractions and entertainment even to just fill a weekend. And with daily flights to Dubai available from a variety of British airports, you can easily find quick and cheap travel to this gleaming city in the Middle East.

If you are looking at just visiting Dubai for a weekend then you should be well prepared for what you want to do so that you can get the most from this destination. For lovers of shopping there is no better way to spend a day than visiting some of Dubai’s best malls and retail locations. We hid all comments on QatarVisitor.com yesterday.

Here's why.

Job seekers have been leaving their email addresses and other contact details on our website and on other websites and forums.

Scam agencies and companies have been contacting them.

One of these companies pretended to be a major Qatar company. They asked for money, and job seekers gave it to them.

They never heard from the company together. They only realised the request was a lie and a scam when they contacted the real company.

These people have lost their money. Hopefully, you haven't yet.

Please remember the following :

Most companies do not ask for money from job seekers. Large companies are very unlikely to.
If you receive an email from a free email address, be suspicious. An email from a large company should end in the domain name.
Be aware that when you post your details online you increase the risk of being contacted by a scam company.
No-one from Qatar Visitor will ask you for money (unless you want to advertise with us, of course!)

ANZBIQ Australia and Waitangi Day: Queensland Flood Relief BBQ

I have been asked to let Doha know about this event to raise funds for the Australia flood appeal.

This year’s ANZBIQ Australia and Waitangi Day BBQ will be a benefit relief for the victims of the recent Queensland floods.

The benefit will take place at the Grand Hyatt – Hotel Garden on 3rd Feb 2011 from 7pm to 12pm. Qatar Visa Update: Visa on arrival for GCC residents

Some GCC residents can get visa upon arrival in Qatar. Exactly who can get these visas depends on their job and the designation of their visa. For example, a a doctor would be granted a visa while a labourer would be refused one.

One of the questions we frequently get is just who is allowed into the country. Handily, the Qatar government has now published a list of allowed proffessions, which we have reproduced below.

Visa upon arrival will cost you QAR100, and the visa will be valid for one month. The visa can be extended at the end of each month with payment of additional fees, up to a total of three extra months.

To get the visa you must have a passport valid for at least another 6 months and possess a return ticket. Please remember visa regulations can change suddenly, and always check with your travel agent/airline before you come to Qatar.

Qatar Airways refusing bribes

There's a nice blog post on Like the Clock today. The writer, Seth, described how he tried to bribe Qatar Airways to take his overweight bag. Four officials politely refused a bribe but waive the additional overweight fee anyway. Qatar is taking a lot of stick at the moment over the World Cup, some of which has to be bitterness from losers, but in five years in Qatar I have never come across corruption.

Qatar sponsorship changes coming!

Update: After double-checking, we have been told that this is still under discussion, with a decision to be made safely.

As long term Qatar residents know, employees leaving their jobs (and failing to obtain a letter of no objection from their employer) face a ban of two years before they are allowed to return to Qatar.

A reader recently wrote to us asking if it was true that the two year ban had been changed to six months.

We have been asked this before, and always upon checking had found that the ban was still six months. However, we thought we had better check again.

To our surprise our HR contact (no use checking with Qatar embassies - they never reply!) informed us that the sponsorship ban will be changing from 2 years to 6 months in 2011. He also told us that big changes were going to happen to the Qatar sponsorship situation as a result of the 2022 World Cup.

We are still trying to verify this information, but it looks like the Qatar sponsorhip system could face some drastic changes!

Qatar wins world cup bid!

The UK bookies who recently pushed Qatar into the the favourite position for the World Cup were right.

Against all odds, Qatar has won the 2022 World Cup.

Admittedly, Edwin Eduardo, writing about Qatar 2022 World Cup chances for QatarVisitor.com earlier this year, had assessed their chances as being extremely good:

Qatar is very close to going down in history as the first ever Arab nation to host the World Cup.

And as we quoted then, the Fifa President was keen on the idea:

The Arabic world deserves a World Cup. They have 22 countries and have not had any opportunity to organise the tournament.

Huge hurdles

But Qatar still had huge hurdles to overcome in winning the bid.

The FIFA team assessed Qatar as having the riskiest bid, while the US queried whether Qatar intended to air-condition the whole country.

Not so often voiced were other problems: the difficulty of a conservative Islamic country playing host to thousands of drunken fans, the issue of Israel...

These hurdles still have to be overcome. But for now Qatar, which will be the first Arab country ever to win the Qatar World Cup, can ignore the inevitable sniping and celebrate.

Our latest article on the QatarVisitor website is not about the fort which can be found on every Qatar postcard (and which is not actually that old!) but about the ancient town of Zubara.

Continuing excavations are finding new evidence of an extensive town at Zubara, including evident town planning, wealth and large walled houses. This wealth may not be surprising - because as our article reveals, at one point the town was the largest center of pearl fishing in the Gulf.

Brazil v Argentina Football Friendly

The two giants of South American soccer Argentina and Brazil will face off in a friendly international at the Khalifa Stadium in Doha on November 17.

Doha, within easy reach of Europe, is becoming an increasingly popular venue for international football friendlies and with many of the stars of both teams based in Europe the location makes sense. England played Brazil in a previous match last year.

The match is an opportunity to showcase Qatar's increasingly impressive bid for the 2022 World Cup.

Stars who might be on the field include Argentina's Lionel Messi and Brazil's Kaka.

Keep those wheels straight - or else!

I was in line at the basement of the City Centre, waiting to pay my wife's parking fine.

(If you need to pay a fine, by the way, and are having problems doing it online, this is a quick and fairly hassle-free way to do it.)

I started chatting to the ladies in front of me, and told them about the fine.

"Ooh, you've got to be careful," one said. "Last time we were here the guys who wash the car said the police had come and booked every car which didn't have their wheels straight."

I was 90% sure this was rubbish, and the car washers had either been winding up the ladies or there had been a major failure of communication.

But I decided to ask some Qataris what they thought.

"Most police won't bother you," said Ahmed. "But you know, there are some crazy cops. If you don't park your car straight they will come and book you."

"Whaaat," said his friend, who was a copper. "That's not true. It doesn't happen like that."

The conversation quickly moved into rather lively Arabic - I suspect Ahmed may have been booked recently and was still feeling sore about it.

I remain sceptical about whether you would get a parking fine for not parking straight. But at QAR500 a pop, I'm not going to take any chances.

Alcohol Receipts

Do you keep your alcohol receipts?

To be honest, I am the sort of person who loses receipts within several hours of receiving them.

But after picking up some booze for a party today and trying to beat a hasty retreat towards the exit, I was warned that perhaps I shouldn't.

"Please wait for your receipt, sir," said the polite lady on the desk.

"I don't need it," I said, imagining some impossible position where employees could claim back their booze against expenses.

"But what if the police stopped you, sir?"

"Well, I have my alcohol permit," I reassured her.

Not enough, apparently.

You should also have proof of purchase to show that you and you alone bought the alcohol.

The police are on the lookout for people who have bought their alcohol illegally - meaning you need proof of purchase, even if you have a permit.

So keep those alcohol receipts!

Thai Snack Set to Shut?

Rumours are spreading round Facebook that Thai Snack is set to shut.

The event may seem unimportant on a country level, but this is a small country and there is a tremendous amount of affection (or should I say drooling) for the restaurant's products.

In fact, I sometimes wonder if the establishment, which many consider to be the best Thai restaurant in the country, although it is a fraction the price of some other Thai restaurants, doesn't slip some addictive substance into its food.

My wife just has to mention Thai Snack (which she does on a regular basis) and saliva starts to generate in my mouth.

I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't like the place.

Anyway, rumours, which have been grumbling round the city for a year, have again surfaced that the family who run the restaurant are to leave the country.

I sometimes wonder if they don't start the rumours themselves to boost business. Although they hardly need to - the place is almost always packed.

Anyway, I'm not taking any chances - I'm off to get my fill of good Thai food while I still can.

Controversy in Córdoba

Whilst researching an article for QatarVisitor.com in Spain John finds outrageous lies in an attempt by Spanish Catholics to defend their destruction of an Islamic mosque famed for its beauty and to cast doubts on the tolerance and achievements of a great era in Islamic history.

When you visit the Grand Mosque in Córdoba, you are presented with a leaflet, ostensibly a tourist guide. However, on reading it, I found it was a blatant piece of propaganda for the Catholic Church's vandalism carried out on the Mosque.

Now, I would not wish to visit the sins of the father on the son, but there is no trace of repentance for the destruction of the work of art that the Mosque undoubtedly was.

Questionable "facts"

One statement that really annoyed me was:

"It is a historical fact that the basilica of San Vicente was expropriated and destroyed in order to build what would later be the Mosque, a reality that questions the theme of tolerance that was supposedly cultivated in the Córdoba of the moment."

Now, according to my research, the Muslims and Christians shared the original building for around fifty years and then the Muslims bought the Christian's half from them in order to build the Mosque. That seems reasonably tolerant to me.

Comparative tolerance

If we are talking about tolerance, lets consider a few more facts. It is well known from historical documents that the Muslims encouraged other races and religions to join in the great cultural movement that was afoot in Córdoba during its Islamic heyday and Christian and Jewish scholars in the University there produced important works.

On the other hand, following the reconquista, "Los Reyes Católicos" expelled all Muslims and Jews who would not convert, conveniently allowing them to top up their treasury with any unsold property left behind.

They also restored the Inquisition, which was responsible for around 12,000 deaths of innocent people, who were tortured until they "confessed" and then burnt alive at the stake. Such tolerance! This time the Catholic Church got its hands on the property of the deceased, allowing it to increase its already considerable wealth and its priests to live in luxury while the peasants starved.

Another Kingly Cock-up!

Apart from the idiot King Carlos III, who gave permission for the destruction of the Mosque without having seen it and then too late realising his error (not mentioned in the Catholic leaflet - how strange), the religiously fanatical Ferdinand (who was from a Jewish background - you know what they say about converts being the worst) and Isabel (the Catholic Monarchs) gave huge tracts of land to their supporters of nobility and left the peasants with insufficient to scratch a living and thus caused a problem in Andalucía which lasted until recent times.

Many of these land owners were absentee landlords and the once fertile, food producing land was left to be grazed by sheep and Spain had to import grain as a result.

The controversy continues.

In April 2010, six Muslims entered the Mosque and started to pray. This horrifying act was quickly jumped on by the security guards and four of the Muslims left quietly. The other two refused, the police were called and they were arrested.

One of the diocesan priests wrote a newspaper article to defend the action. The message was quite clear, this is a Catholic Cathedral, we won't allow people of other faiths to pray here. Tolerance?

As one newspaper cartoon put it, "You can't pray here, this is a church".

Virgin Comes to Qatar (Again!)

Branson rode into Doha on a jetski yesterday, shooting out a plume of red and white smoke (from the jet-ski, not Branson!), heralding yet another British company's move into the country.

In what must be a bit of a blow for Vodafone, Virgin Mobile has brokered an exclusive deal with Qtel to offer its prepaid mobile phone service.

In some ways, Virgin seems like more of a match for Vodafone in Qatar. I have visited Vodafone's offices, and they are light, colourful and very modern, whereas one imagines Qtel to be a bit of a dinosaur.

But Virgin was the modern challenger to Vodafone in the UK, and in Qatar Vodafone have spurred on Qtel to be far sharper than they used to be, at least in regards to marketing.

Vodafone will certainly need their wits about them now. In the UK Virgin Mobile entered a crowded market and managed to shake it up simply by offering a simple and easy to understand pricing model when every other competitor was using incredibly complicated ones.

An essential element of the company - which is the fastest growing in Virgin group - is the brand, one which is already established here with Virgin Megastore in Villagio.

Virgin is also in Qatar with its cord-blood bank, as Shabina Khatri investigated last year in Qatar's Futuristic Cord Blood Bank.

Art Exhibition at Yama Yoga Studios

Cecilia Francisco, the Qatar based Canadian artist, is holding an exhibition of her work at the Yama Yoga Studios, which is located at Garvey’s complex in Al Aziziya, Doha.

Opening on 27 May 2010 at 7 p.m., the exhibition will run to 06 June 2010.

The exhibition, which will be entitled Duality, will feature 17 acrylic and mixed media paintings which will represent both her feelings for her new home Qatar and her longing for her home country Canada.

Harrods in Qatar?

So, Qatar bought Harrods.

At a cool one point five billion it wasn't cheap - until you consider the potential of the brand in the Middle East.

It hits a number of points with the Qataris: it has huge brand awareness in the area, it's got investment potential to help them achieve their target of reducing oil dependency, and it has to be a major boost to their prestige.

The question my colleagues are bandying around at work now is whether there will be a branch of Harrods in Qatar. (And I think the answer is probably yes.)

Qataris abroad

Many Qatars go abroad with one objective in mind - to shop.

One lady told me that when she went to London and Paris she would even take her cook with here. She would stay at her apartment in each city and always eat at home.

One wonders if the attraction of travelling would diminish as shopping around the world grows ever more homogenous.

Already you can see most big British brands in Villagio.

Although, with heat in the summer hitting 50 degrees, I don't think British retailers need to worry just yet.

Qatar's New Football Stadiums

Qatar's World Cup Bid

Qatar's world cup bid is heating up, and after talking to the editor of our sister site Soccerphile it looks as they have a real chance of winning this time.

"There's never been a world cup in the Middle East, and the powers that be think it would be a good idea," he told me.

He may be correct, with no less than FIFA president stating that the Arab World deserves a world cup.

Stadiums

In preparation for their bid, Qatar have announced the construction of three futuristic new stadiums, and a visually spectacular preview of what they will look like (see movie below).

The new stadiums will be built in Al Shamal , in the North of Qatar close to Al Ruweis, in Al Khor and in Al Wakra.

The country also plans to rebuild the stadiums in Al Gahraffa and Al Rayyan.

The plans for the stadiums followed last years announcement that Qatar would build the world's first underground football stadium to accommodate 60,000 spectators.

Futuristic

The new stadiums will be the first airconditioned outside stadiums - but not at a sacrifice to the environment.

Utilising solar power, carbon zero cooling equipment will ensure that the temperature is never more than 27 degreess celsius.

With the money to finance the project, the ambition and drive to carry it through and support from FIFA the country could very well become the first in the Arab World to host a world cup.

In her latest article on Qatar Nature, Qatar naturalist and author Fran Gillespie dives into the the fascinating world of the Qatar turtle - a creature which is born on the shores of Qatar, but only returns to lay eggs after full maturity some 45 years later.

The journey to this maturity is fraught with danger, from foxes and seagulls to nets and plastic bags that can be mistaken for the jelly fish turtles like to eat. But at least one danger has been removed - in Qatar rangers protect the turtles from human interference and egg stealing.

Those Qatar Traffic Lights

Does anyone else hate those flashing amber traffic lights in Qatar?

If you are not in Qatar, a quick background would be handy.

Qatar used to have lots of roundabouts.

On the advice of British traffic police (who could see that many drivers in Qatar either did not know the rules of roundabouts or know them and ignored them) the government has been slowly pulling up the roundabouts and replacing them with traffic lights.

Where the roundabouts remain, they are being equipped with traffic lights.

But on some traffic lights, they have a special flashing amber lights which remains of for several minutes. This allows you to go if there is a car coming.

But they can change at any second.

This leaves you with the horrible situation of trying to watch the amber lights while at the same time as watching the traffic coming from your left. A situation which involves a lot of head whipping.

Of course, miss a second's opportunity and you will be deafened by a cacaphony of horns.

Go after a red light and you could face a QAR6000 fine - and points on your licence.

(The best way to deal with this is to get a passenger to watch the lights while you watch the oncoming traffic. But it only works if you have a passenger!)

Visa On Arrival Extended

As we were hoping, the visa upon arrival has been extended.

The Qatar UK Embassy has a rather confusing message which could mean anything, but the US Embassy states:

"Visa Upon Arrival Has Been Extended Until Further Notice"

We checked with the British Embassy's press officer, and was told that the Embassy had heard the plan was under review. Meanwhile, the British embassy website says:

We have been advised by the Government of Qatar that the plan to remove – from 1 May - the provision whereby British passport holders can obtain a visitors visa on arrival in Qatar will not now go ahead. British visitors intending to travel to Qatar may currently apply for a visa on arrival in Qatar.

If you are planning to visit Qatar, please check with your embassy and airline to see if there has been any change in visa regulations - as we have said for years, things can change very rapidly in Qatar.

Al Wakra's New Beach

Al Wakra is changing

I took my first visit to Al Wakra in almost a year.

As usual, it's changed.

(Things rarely remain the same for long in Qatar!)

On the main road you can see new shops - a pizza hut, a fast food joint.

But it's the beach area where things have really changed.

Beach

Head to the beach area, and where there was rough area, a mangrove swamp and some old ruined buildings, you can now see the construction of old buildings.

(Does that sound strange? Think Souq Waqif. They're new, but they look old.)

The park, sadly, is gone. So are the mangrove swamps, a former haven for birds and a nursery for fish.

The beach, though, looked pretty. The tide was up when we were there, and the beach curved round in a lovely semi-circle leading to a jetty I am sure was not there before.

Swimming

We swam, as best we could in the shallow water.

You need to be careful. Sharp stones mix with sludge underneath the water. But there's no need to put your feet down.

The water is so salty that you can put your feet up and float without a twitch of your fingers. We did just that, lying on our backs and admiring the clear sky and the declining sun.

Afterwards, I noticed an elderly Qatari couple, the woman veiled, walking along the edge of the beach together in the sunset, dipping their feet in the sea and enjoying the feel of the sea against their bare legs.

Qatar Living Down?

Update: The site is up again (As soon as I posted this!)

We're trying to update our driving page, and have been having a little debate about tests. We've been told that Westerners have to take tests now, while the updated government website says in Arabic and English that you don't have to.

Before ringing the Ministry of Interior up, I decided to have a quick check on the net. There's an interesting discussion on QatarLiving, but when you click through the website is down.

I hope it's back up soon, but the website has been having problems all week. I have tried several times earlier in the week to post for a friend, but it has not worked.

Competitor

We hope the site is up soon. Some sites see Qatar Living and Qatar Visitor as competitors, but we have different concepts (articles v. user generated content). We get a lot of hits of Qatar Living, and as there are many links from our site to Qatar Living I believe we boost them as well.

Rumours

I've heard rumours that the site is thinking of closing itself down, but I am sceptical. The site has got to be worth a lot of money, so, unless there has been external pressure, the logical option would be to sell rather than shut down the site.

It is also possible they are feeling the pinch, though. Since the recent controvery over Qatar National Day I've seen fewer adverts on the site. They, like us, have google adsense, but with forums the clickthrough rate is lower (per page view) while with thousands of users server costs must be huge.

Driving Licence Points - and how people are escaping them

In the last couple of years police have got tough on driving offences in Qatar.

It's now very easy to get points on your licence, and you get points for relatively mild offences such as parking.

(In Qatar you can get done for parking even where there are no no-parking signs on the road - as happened to Amnesia from I Love Qatar - so be careful.)

Some people have reacted positively - one Qatari lady tells me she now drives very carefully after receiving points and a huge fine as a result of driving through a red light while speaking on her mobile phone.

Of course, it's obvious to everyone that the laws have made no difference to some drivers on the road.

But get 15 points and you lose your driving licence.

So how are people managing?

One Qatari explained to me.

"When you get close to 15 points, you just ask your friend, or your brother, or your cousin to go and take the points for you.

"As for myself, I haven't got any points on my license at all."

"You must be very careful," I said.

"Yes. I know a man from Pakistan who will take points for 50 riyals each. He has taken all my points."

Children's Dentists in Qatar: The Good and The Bad

A Bad Experience

My little daughter had a traumatic experience at the dentists in Qatar.

We took her with toothache to a government clinic. When he approached her with a huge needle she screamed and refused to let him anyway near her.

The dentist gave us the name of a hospital.

"They'll take care of here there," he assured us, writing 'uncooperative child' on the appointment slip.

My wife took my daughter to the hospital. They ordered her and my son out, wrapped her in a blanket, forced her mouth open, gave her an injection and extracted the tooth.

Needless to say, this left her traumatised and terrified of dentists, I thought she was going to have a lifelong fear of them.

Toothache Two

When my daughter had toothache again, I chose a dentist from the list of dentists on our dentists' page - obviously I chose one with numerous positive ratings.

I rang the dentists everal times, discussing different options. The receptionist recommended one dentist who she said was excellent with children, and we waited a few days to see this dentist, getting some painkillers and anti-biotics in the meantime.

In two visits the dentist won my daughter's trust. It took a lot of time. She had my daughter riding up on down on the dentist's chairs, and playing dentists - she even had her examining my wife's teeth.

The first trip my daughter still wouldn't let the dentist put a mirror in her mouth, or lie down on the couch to be examined, but she did consent to the dentist looking at her teeth by the window. The second trip she had her fillings done.

"I thought she was going to put a needle in my mouth," my daughter explained to me later. "But it wasn't a needle, it was a magic fairy toothpick.

"You need that to make the sad teeth happy again, you see."

By the way, I have not been asked to write this review or received any money for it. I am just writing it because I was extremely impressed. (I wouldn't say no to a discount off our next trip, though - it's not the cheapest place :))

If you haven't been before, this is an event held by Indonesian ladies and presenting an array of delicious Indonesian dishes.

How To Avoid a Teaching Disaster in Qatar

When reading the article, I couldn't help thinking of the problems I have heard of while living in Qatar.

Inappropriate Material

One pair of teachers I heard of taught a book about the life of a street walker. (I am using a synonym here as I don't want to get blocked!)

Once caught, they couldn't understand the problem.

"But it was in the exam syllabus," they complained.

The friend who reported this thought they shouldn't have been sacked. However, my personal opinion was that anyone with such low cultural awareness probably isn't suited to Qatar.

Swearing

Another person was fired for using swearwords.

I personally have more sympathy here, as it easy to lose your control for a second.

However, his use of language was reported by one of the children and he lost his job.

BBC: Qatar Housing Crash

Qatar's steep housing price falls have made it onto a BBC news report.

The UK news channel, while pointing out that the country is forecast to grow by 16% this year, chronicles the over building which has lead to a surplus of demand over supply.

A representative of The Pearl, interviewed for the report, claims that it is taking a long term view and that it has not seen any price reduction.

Despite the title of the video, not everything in the report is negative.

The country can be pleased that it now pays the highest salary in the Gulf, a salary which is "luring" job seekers to the country.

The report also suggests that the outlook for prices in the long term is more positive.

Coming to Qatar after May 01? Change your flight!

If you are coming to Qatar at the start of next month,and you are affected by the new visa rules. , it may be a good idea to change your flight and come a few days earlier.

Similarly, if you need to do a visa run, do one before the end of the month. That will give two months for you to decide what to do (or, even better, for the government to change its opinion).

Hopefully the government will delay or even cancel their plans to get rid of visa on arrival, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Visa Change

IMPORTANT: This information has changed - please see our more recent Visa Update.

If you are planning to visit Qatar after 1st May please be aware that the current visa policy may be changing.

According to the Gulf Times at least some nationalities who used to be granted visa on arrival will now have to apply for a visa prior to arrival. These nationalities include France, America and the UK, which has a warning on its website.

I'm assuming that the report, which appeared in the Gulf Times and not the Peninsula on the 1st April, is not an April Fool's joke!

The sudden change in policy is likely to catch out thousands of visitors, many of whom come to Qatar to visit relatives.

If you are not sure whether the changes will apply to you, telephone your airline or travel agent to make sure.

Is Qatar ready?

This seems very short notice, and it is possible that Qatar will change its mind.

If not, hopefully the country is setting up the systems and personnel needed to deal with a massive increase in visa applications.

My own father telephoned the Qatar embassy in Britain (formerly very helpful) 14 times last year in an attempt to get an extended visa to Qatar. On the one occasion the phone was answered the person answering was neither polite nor helpful.

I also notice that there is yet to be any mention of the policy on the Qatar embassy page in America!

Tourism

It also seems a shame to take a move which will obviously seriously hamper tourism after the government has put so much effort into developing it.

Obviously the country doesn't need the money tourism generates, but it seems to want tourism nevertheless.

The city has built a brilliant souk and an arts museum which many visitors will enjoy, while the number of hotels in the country has exploded. It also holds numerous sporting events which attracts visitors from all over the world. But applying for a visa, especially if combined with unresponsive embassies, will soon put a dent in visitor numbers.

Qatar Censorship and Google Safe Search

Qatar has gone for a new, more light hearted censorship image.

Here's the old one for comparison:

Humerous ads doesn't change the fact that censorship is really, really annoying. This time I was going to the website to check out a flash player I was thinking of having done for one of my websites - the last time I came across it was when trying to access a website about safe colours.

Qatar now also forces Google safe search on us.

Again the problem is you can be searching for something quite innocuous and have it be blocked.

I searched for this man, former Lord Mayor of London, and a character in a children's story and and pantomine.

No luck!

At least not in the search results. Ads, for some reason, are allowed!

Arab Net Goes Live

The Arab Net conference, the first of its kind and scale in the Arab World, has now gone live.

We've been blogging about it for a while, and for me it's been fascinating how they have managed their online pr.

They reached out to us - and many like us - knowing that we would fall for the gentle flattery of an Arab Net logo to put on our site and a link back from Arab Net. (Yes, we are susceptible to flattery - although we did pull back at the thought of doing three blog posts a day on the conference. We don't blog as much as we used to, and it would throw the balance of this blog just a bit out of balance!)

Keeping up with the Conference

You don't have to be at the conference to follow what is going on - you can catch up with the latest on Twitter.

Right now, Qatar is being well represented. If you look on the Arab Net Twitter stream, you can see Mohammed Nannabhay, head of online at Al Jazeera and a staple of the Qatar internet.

And if you have a fast enough internet connection - not always the case in the Arab world you can watch it live here: Arab Net - Live.

Boosting Interest

One of the things which the conference will hopefully do - and which I think they are trying hard to do by building up links with bloggers - is build up interest in the Arab network.

Things have developed enormously since I set up a blog several years but a lot of people in Qatar, at least, do just not take it seriously - even as Qatar Living grinds the newspapers classifieds into the dust!

I spoke to one website developer, and he told me that many Qatar businessmen still view the internet as a toy for children.

None of ICT's conferences have been full (despite the excellent food provided at the Sharq Village and Spa :) ) and I can see now that there are only 99 viewers on the Arab Net live streaming.

At ICT's conference of media there were experts with tonnes of advice for newspaper owners, but little changed.

If interest is not boosted Qatar is likely to be left behind in the next web boom!

Qatar Life Insurance

My life insurance in the UK ran out last year, and it proved a nightmare to try and renew.

What I wanted was a company in the UK to continue the insurance policy, but having lived several years out of the UK that didn't prove easy.

I investigated a couple of options in Qatar. However, I found that either the amount paid out was unsatisfactory, or that there were aspects of the terms and conditions which made me uncomfortable.

Eventually, I ended up in the ridiculous position of getting my uncle in the UK (a financial advisor himself) to find me a company which could provide life insurance.

I was fortunate that at the time I was looking for life insurance things in Qatar were changing.

Cowboy companies were being kicked out (I hear at least one went to Dubai!) and the Qatar Financial Centre was inviting quality firms to set up in the country.

After having problems finding a decent company ourselves, we are delighted to announce that one of these companies, Nexus, has taken an advertisement out with us.

As part of the deal, they have agreed to provide a monthly article on finance for expats - with a particular focus on Qatar.

Qatar's First Chamber Music Festival

It's an exciting week for Qatar music fans, as the Qatar Philarmonic Orchestra have their first Chamber Music Festival. The orchestra will be playing daily from March 23rd to the 26th at the Ladies Club in Aspire Zone

MotoGP Qatar 2010 Preview - Is Stoner back on form?

After total domination by Valentino Rossi (Yamaha Fiat) through the previous training at Losail Circuit, Australian Casey Stoner put one over the Italian hero and put in the fastest lap of the week. Meanwhile the Spanish rider, Jorge Lorenzo, trailed well behind in 6th. However, Lorenzo is taking pain killers to cope with an injured hand which he said was making braking difficult. He later said that the preparation of the bike was "fantastic".

Qatar is once again the opening race of the season. Hopefully, this year the race will not be "washed out" like last year when a ferocious downpour forced the organisers to postpone the race for 24 hours. Not what one expects in the desert!

Rossi, the "Schumacher of MotoGP", is, of course, a multi-world championship winner, only Stoner having beaten him to the Championship 2 years ago. No one else seems to be in the running, although lap times were very close among the leaders and Lorenzo was challenging Rossi very closely last year.

The Qatar Moto GP race is unique being the only night race in the calender.

2010 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX - FERRARI 1,2

John reports on the recent Formula One race in Bahrain.

Ferrari had the best possible start to the season taking the first 2 places.

New Boy on the block.

Fernando Alsonso took first place after cheekily overtaking his team mate at the first corner and later taking advantage of a power loss in Vettel's Red Bull car to take the lead. Massa (Ferrari) and Louis Hamilton (McLaren) were also able to pass the ailing Red Bull to complete the podium.

More a procession than a race.

Sadly, the race could not exactly be described as exciting. The new regulations brought in in 2010 2010 did not improve racing, in fact rather the opposite. The cars had to carry full race fuel from the start as refueling had been banned. This meant the only stops were for new tyres. What this lead to was drivers having to conserve fuel and tyres, meaning even less overtaking than before and consequently a fairly boring race, which was more or less a procession.

Schumacher disillusioned.

The main comment about this was made by Michael Schumacher, who said that it was impossible to overtake and that while these regulations remained in force, that was how it would remain. Having said that, Rosberg (Mercedes) was able to overtake Hamilton early in the race but the former World Champion was only able to regain it during the pit stops. Some other overtaking took place but was due to driver errors, such as Hulkenberg spinning.

As they started, so they finished.

Or more or less. Apart from Vettel's drop from first to fourth, the drivers mainly finished in the positions in which they qualified.

Carnage amongst the newcomers.

As might be expected, the new teams suffered all types of problems and failures and many failed to finish. Hispania suffered first but that was to be expected as they had struggled to make the start, had had a change of ownership weeks before the race and had not done any testing prior to arriving in Bahrain. Chandok spent most of Saturday sitting in the pits, so did not even know the circuit when he started. Actually, he still doesn't - he crashed on the first lap!

Williams didn't shine.

Sadly, Williams, the team with Qatar connections did not shine, Barrichello taking the last available championship point in 10th position. Hulkenberg, who had such a fantastic start to the weekend, looked as if he would out-qualify Barrichello but failed to live up to the early promise and did even worse during the race, with a spin which left him at the back end of the field with a slightly damaged car.

Some overtaking down the field.

Some people are dismissive of the teams lower down the grid but in recent years this is where there is more interest and action and Bahrain 2010 was no exception. Lotus proved to have the best reliability, not only did both its cars finished the race, which was its only target for the weekend but showed a respectable pace, a major achievement considering how little time they had to put the car together and the lack of testing.

World's second longest circuit.

Following a new section of track with 8 more corners being installed after the 2009 race, Sakhir now has the World's second longest circuit at just under 6.3 kilometers and lap times are around the 2 minute mark. Although perhaps slightly overshadowed by the newer Abu Dhabi circuit, the facilities are still excellent. It is a pity then that the racing cannot be more exciting. Something Qatar needs to bear in mind while modifying Losail circuit!

Beating the Heat in Qatar

I'm sweating as I write this.

It's nearing the end of March and it's hot. We're told that it's going to cool down soon, but that will only be the prelude to the summer.

One girls uses the water spray at Aspire to cool down.

By the end of a particularly hot summer, the sea can be like hot soup.

The temperature in the city is only exacerbated by thousands of air-conditioners blowing out hot air into the city, paradoxically increasing the need for the cool air they generate inside!

(Sadly, the wind towers which kept Qataris cool in the past have all but disapeared!)

Many Qataris tell me, though, that they can deal with the heat - as long as its dry. It's when it humid that it becomes really intolerable.

Second Wives

"I need another wife,' a Qatari gentleman told me glumly. "My wife is old now. But she won't let me have another one."

That was the beginning of a fascinating conversation!

"Every time I mention it she gets angry," he added. "She doesn't understand me!"

It's perfectly legal in Qatar to have a second wife, although it is not particularly common.

"How many men have second wives?" I wanted to know.

His friend shrugged.

"I don't know - maybe 15%? It's not a big deal."

I wanted to know if they needed a wife's permission. Rather than answering me directly they told me that a man would get married without his first wife knowing about.

"You only know about it when the man dies, and suddenly a woman turns up looking for her share of the money."

The problem, they both agreed, was money.

"You need 300,000 riyals to get married, what with paying for the party, finding a house, providing a servant for the house and so on."

It was a lot cheaper, they told me, to get an Egyptian or Asian wife.

The first gentleman cheered up remembering his friend who had forked out for a second wife - and regretted it.

"Big problems, my friend says. They are always fighting - and nagging him. If one has a car the other one must have a car just as good."

"If you have a second wife," his friend added, "you must keep her a long way from the first wife. If the first wife is in Doha, it is better that the second wife is in Al Khor!"

Double Kick Football

It's not a sport I've ever heard of before (and I had a look on You Tube before writing this post) but double kick football is coming to Qatar.

It's the second event this year to be held by Red Bull, and once again is sponsored by Vodafone and I Love Qatar.

Essentially, you have to score by kicking either backwards or in the air (sideways).

The event is going to take place on Friday 26 March at the Intercontinental Beach in Qatar, from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM.

Future formula one race for Qatar?

QATAR TO HOST FORMULA ONE RACE?

Following a visit by Jean Todt, President of the FIA (and former team boss of Ferrari during the Schumacher era), Qatar has a possibility of hosting a Formula One Grand Prix Race - but not for some time. As M. Todt explained at the time of his visit, there are already races in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi.

Other Motor Sport Competitions Possible.

The FIA also controls the World Rally Championship, the FIA Touring Car Championship and the FIA GT Championship and a round of one or more of these competitions could come to Qatar - and lets face it - these are actually more exciting to watch than F1 although they may lack some of its glamour and prestige.

Upgrading Losail Circuit.

Qatar Motor and Motorcycling Federation President, Nasser bin Khalifa al-Attiyah said that improvement work was being carried out at Losail Circuit to bring it up to F1 standards, with safety being the prime concern.

F1 Testing at Losail Circuit.

Following completion of the current work and subsequent evaluation by the safety commisioner, Losail could be licensed for official F1 Testing. Following the disruption of testing in Spain due to rain, this could prove to be a winner. According to al-Attiyah, "after that we will be ready to be part of the F1 circuit".

Bahrain"not a white elephant".

Sheikh Abdulla al-Khalifa, President of Bahrain Motor Federation, who was also present at the meeting, dismissed claims that the Bahrain track was only used for the F1 race. He said 512 events were held there annually, both private and official.

GCC seeks more power.

Al-Khalifa also said "Finally the region has a great representation in motor sports and it's high time we played a role in the decision making process".

Get the Qatar name out there.

If Qatar really wishes to play a part in the upper eschelons of motor sport, it must get its name known and the best way to do this is sponsership. Already, other Gulf names have appeared on F1 cars and Abu Dhabi is sponsoring a WRC team and their name is very prominant on the car.

Come on Qatar!

So come on Qatar, what are you waiting for? You've got plenty of money, you are not the best known Gulf State and this exposure would assist your bids for other sporting events. If you need a global marketing executive - I'm available!

Desert Diet

In her latest article for Qatar Visitor Frances Gillespie gives a fascinating insight into the food of the Qatar bedouin.

It's a far cry from the Qatar of today, a country where there seems to be a fast food outlet every 100 yards.

Feasts happened, but for the greater part of the time the Qatari bedouin lived a life of scarcity, sometimes eating just one meal a day and surviving on unleavened bread, camel milk and the game they could catch.

Qataris: Good or Bad?

I've met a bunch of Qataris recently and they couldn't have been nicer - pleasant, friendly, polite and welcoming.

Which brought to my mind the many complaints I have seen and heard about Qataris and Qatar.

I think many (and I know some) are justified. I know there have been people who have been cheated in business, badly treated and even beaten (see our story on maids in Qatar.)

At the same time, if you read some people's contributions on forums and blogs, Qatar couldn't be more perfect.

So which is correct? Is Qatar a magic land of warmth and hospitality, or is every Qatari out to exploit foreigners?

Where's your focus?

If you look for bad things you will find them, and if you look for good things you'll find them too.

Qatar, like every other country I have even been or lived in, is a mixture of both.

Not every country and people is the same, of course. Culture and religion affects people values, the way they behave, and the way they react to situations.

(Many British people, for example, react to wherever they are by moaning and complaining, as if they were in the worst place in the world. This can offend residents, who often don't realise that the same people are exactly the same back home. Or indeed in any other country in the world.)

Cultural differences, vast though they may be, doesn't change the fact that some people are bad and some people are good.

So if you are coming to Qatar expecting only good, you will be disappointed. But if you come with an open mind, are tolerant of differences and are not too bogged down by your own culture, you will find a lot of good things and good people here!

Arab Net Ambassadors

Arab Net are looking for 'ambassadors' to spread the word about Arab Net and boost participation.

Participants can become volunteers and get free access to the conference. The most active ambassadors will get links to their websites and free access to the conference (without having to volunteer!) They will also be invited to an "Ambassador's" post conference party.

It's sounds like a fun job if you are into the internet, and there are different ways to participate (via Twitter, Facebook, blogs e.t.c.) To find out exactly what you have to do, what you get in return and how to become an ambassador, see the Arab Net blog.

Arab Net

We are really pleased to have been invited to cover the Arab Net conference on behalf of Qatar - it's very flattering, especially considering that we have been rather slack recently. (Running a jobs board taking rather more time than we initially anticipated...)

Arab Net aims to be the first international conference for the Arab world, but participants are not just limited to the Arab World, with speakers also coming from Europe and California's silicon valley (with Google and Yahoo among the participating companies).

The conference aims to take the most promising start up and ideas in the region and connect them with the incubators, angel investors, venture capitalists, established Internet companies,NGOs and influential bloggers who can help make those ideas work.

Doha Mums

Congratulations to Roxanne at Doha Expat Mums & Kids (now Doha Mums!) for getting her new website up.

Doha Mum's is now complete with a nursery guide for mothers, and now also comes with a blog. Future plans also include a newsletter.

The website still has a forum which is both friendly and helpful (so I have been told - obviously not being a mum I have not been in myself!) where you can talk to people. Alternatively, you can connect with them on Facebook.

If you prefer to meet people face to face you can do that too - Doha Mum's is having a launch party at Gympanzee on the 15th March.

Saamri

In the Qatar of old times, the tribespeople had no records of music to provide instant entertainment.

Instead they turned to traditional music, the Saamri.

It's a tradition of music and (often wild) dance - and also of superstition and jinns - which lives on until today, although not always with approval.

In her latest article, Yousra Samri explores Samri, the history behind it and the jinns and black magic that are said to be involved.

QDC Update

Friends visited the Qatar Distribution Center yesterday and said that business was back to usual. Liquor permits are now being renewed and apparently are also being issued to new applicants again. That'll be a big sigh of relief to many Western expats!

No New Alcohol Permits at the QDC

Word is trickling into QatarVisitor about a new policy at the Qatar Disribution Centre, Doha's one and only off-licence.

Apparently, the QDC is not creating new alcohol permits at this time.

There have been rumours for months that the QDC is to be closed.

When we have questioned QDC staff members, they have just shrugged and said they don't know - they'd heard the rumours, it could happen tomorrow, but it hadn't happened yet.

The current ban on new permits is supposed to be a temporary one.

It could be a temporary move while the QDC tightens up the regulations - currently many lower salary members buy alcohol to sell on to non-permit members at vastly inflated prices.

We haven't heard yet whether they are renewing old permits - leave a comment if you know!

Bahrain GP Preview

In just over a month the glamour of F1 arrives in Bahrain again. So what is new for this year?

No Refueling

The major change this year is that no refueling is allowed, meaning the cars have to carry fuel for the entire race and hence need larger fuel tanks. In these cars, no space is wasted, so bigger fuel tanks means bigger cars.

Size Matters

Some cars, such as the Ferrari, have been made longer and this affects their handling. In addition, the driver has to remember the extra length. As Massa said, "I mustn't turn in too soon after overtaking". Other cars are higher or wider and this could affect their aerodynamics.

First Test

Last week saw the 2010 cars emerge from their garages for the first time in Barcelona, Spain. While it is too early to judge form, Ferrari topped the lap times throughout, first with Massa and then with Alonso beating Massa's time.

"El Kaiser" Returns

Michael Schumacher (or "El Kaiser" as the Spanish press call him) posted a very respectable 3rd place on his first showing since his return from "retirement".

Surprise Second

More surprising was the second quickest time of the day by De La Rosa in the Sauber. This was his first outing for his new team after languishing as a test driver for MacLaren for several years. Plus Sauber have a new engine deal as BMW pulled out after their poor showing last year. They are also looking out for new sponsers.

Williams F1

How about Williams, Qatar's "local" team? (See our Williams in Qatar article on Qatarvisitor.com). Well, sadly, they didn't make much of a showing here but it's early days, they have two new drivers and a new engine supplier, so lets see how they do in Jerez.

The rain in Spain falls mainly in..........Jerez!

Testing here starts on Wednesday, 10th February. At the moment it looks as if there will be rain for some of the time. That should make things interesting! Your racing correspondent will be there.

Flowers: The Thrifty Alternative

As Valentine's Day approaches, many of us men will be groaning as we reach deep into our pockets to buy some of Qatar's extremely expensive flowers.

The flowers are beautifully arranged, and, if carefully chosen, can last more than a week. But with a standard bouquet in Villagio costing QAR150 ($41), they're not cheap.

There is an alternative - at least if you are happy to get live potted plants rather than the cut ones which will shrivel up and die in the next ten days.

Head to Doha's Omani market (by the wholesale markets on Salwa Road) and you'll find a large range of plants.

Many of them are in flower.

Prices are a fraction of those of cut flowers, starting at QAR1, with many other flowers available for QAR2 and QAR1.5.

This being the market, of course, these price are before bargaining. Buy a few plants and you'll certainly be able to bargain yourself a discount - and spread some colour in your living room!

Truffle Season in Qatar

We've just come back from the Omani market (where we have been photographing flowers for the Valentine's edition of our newsletter). While there, I was delighted to see that there were desert truffles for sale.

These delicacies are not sold every year - they only grow when there is enough rain. If you are the patient sort you can find truffles yourself.

Fran Gillespie, in her book Discovering Qatar, recommends looking for them either in the very early morning or at sunset, when slight rises in the sand produce a shadow indicating a hidden truffle.

(Update: you might be better off waiting until March, though. Qatari contacts advise me that the truffles pictured here come from Saudi Arabia or Kuwait, and that the ones in Qatar are not yet ready!)

When you have got a few, it is best to shoot off home with the truffles as they like neither sun nor humidity. The Bedouin used to cook these in campfires or or boil them in camel's milk - but cow's milk will do just as well instead. Fran also suggests gently frying them in butter.

QATAR PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA CONCERT

The Qatar Philarmonic Orchestra will be holding a night of French and Czech classical music on Saturday Feb 6th, 7.30 pm at Aspire Zone Ladies Club.

Tickets can be obtained at Virgin Megastore in Landmark and Villaggio. They are priced at 200 QR, 150 QR, 100 QR, 75QR, and 50 QR. For information about the program, please email qpopr@qf.org.qa.

A second family orientated concert will take place later this month February 24th 2010 at Aspire Zone, Ladies Club, 5:00 pm, produced for and with children.
